Subtle
Energy
“Look,
it cannot be seen—it is beyond form.
Listen,
it cannot be heard—it is beyond sound.
Grasp,
it cannot be held—it is intangible.
These
three things are indefinable;
Therefore
they are joined in one...”
Lao
Tsu (Tao Te Ching; #14)
I
ran into a former student at the Dalai Lama festivities last weekend.
She told me a little of what she is doing now in her bodywork
practice. Remembering this good work, this gentle touch that
penetrates deep into body and soul, I felt a little regret about not
doing it anymore. In fact, I just sent my massage table to the
Lovelady's Thrift Store, because it's a shame to have it and not use
it.
This
feeling of underground turning, this restless psychic energy, has
been with me ever since. So this morning, by chance, I saw my bag of
rune stones, an ancient method of divination, on the bookshelf as I
was choosing a morning reading. I decided to consult the runes about
my student, and my questions about my own path diverging away from
bodywork. The rune I drew out of the bag was Othila, the symbol for
separation, retreat, and inheritance. It describes a time of
separating paths, of shedding old skins, and acquiring something new,
by giving up or abandoning a particular pursuit or behavior. I felt
reassured that I had followed my truth by allowing my path to
diverge.
Let
me say, the use of divination tools is as old as humanity. Some folks
fear it because they associate it with the occult, but it is nothing
more (or less) than intuition at work. It is use of the subtle energy
that cannot be seen, heard, or grasped, but is valid, none the less.
What one finds when one opens up to subtle energy is a synchronicity
of events that all point in the same direction. For instance, I gave
up my table on Saturday, I ran into my old student on Sunday, and
this morning, the Tao Te Ching reading led me to the runes, which
spoke to my question about giving up bodywork. I'd call that
synchronicity in action.
There
is so much to learn in this Earth School. Everyday, we have
opportunities to extend our range of experience beyond the usual
“news of the day,” beyond the material world, beyond the range of
our five senses where all eternity lies.
In
the Spirit,
Jane
