Archetype of the Queen

The Queen

“Therefore, I am sure that this, my coronation, is not the symbol of a power and a splendor that are gone but a declaration of our hopes for the future, and for the years I may, with God’s Grace and Mercy, be given to reign and serve you as your queen.”

Queen Elizabeth II

And thus began the seventy-year reign of Elizabeth, Queen of England. I remember seeing her coronation when I was only 6 years old. It seemed like a fairytale—which is because of the archetypal pattern that Elizabeth so competently embodied. There has never been another woman who gave life to the Queen archetype as completely as Elizabeth II.

I watched a video by Caroline Myss this morning in which she spoke about Queen Elizabeth, and about the cosmic consequences of her death. Myss pointed out that when an archetypal energy pattern enters or leaves the world, the effects are global and long-lasting. The last of these archetypal shifts we experienced was when Trump, archetype of the trickster, was elected president. He came on the scene as a total outsider, whom many people thought was a joke, and against all odds, became president. His style of leadership shook up the entire world and continues to spiral outward like the rings made by a rock thrown into a pond.

Elizabeth, as queen, was the opposite of Trump’s trickster. She was a rock standing in the fast-moving current of modern-day life. She grounded her people and elevated them. When she entered the room, everyone bowed to her as the recognized embodiment of the Monarch. When someone anywhere in the world said, “The Queen” everyone knew that they were speaking of Elizabeth, and no other. This has been called “whitewashing the colonial oppressors,” but in some important way, Elizabeth stood apart from that unfortunate history. In her devotion to her people, and in her ever-present, ever-dutiful day-to-day existence, she was Queen in the truest sense of the word.

Now, for the foreseeable future, the United Kingdom will have Kings rather than Queens. It’s hard to imagine that Charles, whose foibles have been frequent and public, will have the same positive impact as Elizabeth. Given that he went from global playboy to the philandering husband, who broke the heart of his wife, the beloved Princess Diana, he comes to the throne with more baggage than a Missouri mule. It will be interesting to see if the archetypal energy of “the King” can change him from frog into royalty. At least this frog is environmentally conscious and may be just what is needed to usher the UK into the 21st century.

Elizabeth’s passing will be felt for a long, long time, even for the people of this country and much of the world. She constellated the archetype of royalty, and as a true believer in being anointed by God to lead, she never waivered in seventy years from the duties and responsibilities of Monarch. May she rest in peace beside the love of her life, Prince Philip. My prayers are with the people of the United Kingdom as they bid their Queen goodbye and go through this transition of power.

                                                  In the Spirit,

                                                  Jane
