Synchronous Events

Woo-Woo on Steroids

“Synchronicity is choreographed by a great pervasive intelligence that lies at the heart of nature and is manifest in each of us through intuitive knowledge.”

Deepak Chopra

Carl Jung coined the term synchronicity. It refers to simultaneous events which appear to be significantly related though they do not come from a common source. A synchronous event might be something like overhearing a conversation between strangers in a restaurant where you went to have a cup of coffee, and that conversation answers a question you’ve been pondering for some time. It’s when random events sync together in a meaningful way though they do not have a common source. Often, we simply think of them as coincidences.

Yesterday, I went with my cousin to her church to meet a group of women who make sewn and crocheted lap-blankets and quilts as a ministry to young people and the elderly. I had never met any of these women, but instantly engaged with one of them over quilt patterns and designs. We shared ideas and showed each other phone photos of our work. She had just returned from a river cruise in Europe. She began to tell me about the river being extremely low and how difficult it had been to get the boat through the shallow parts. At one point, all the passengers had to get off the boat because it had been damaged in the narrow, shallow channels. Viking provided an identical sister boat for the rest of the journey. That was only strange because I had heard the same story from friends in Birmingham—who happened to be on the same boat as the woman I was talking with in a random church basement in Newton, NC.

Last night, the brothers of my cousin Sandy and their wives came for dinner. I just happened to overlap timewise with this third cousin, Jim, and his wife Denise who live in Orlando, FL and are looking for a house here for their retirement years. When Denise walked in, we were surprised to see that she and I wore exactly the same clothes; not just jeans and a tee, but an embroidered shift worn with blue tights. And not only that, but Jim and Sandy’s mate, Ron had on identical shorts and polo shirts. It was as though the universe heard that I was looking for examples of synchronicity and decided to fill my day with them.

Carl G. Jung said, “Synchronicity is an ever-present reality for those who have eyes to see it.” Most research shows that when we decide to be conscious to anything, including coincidence (synchronous events), we unconsciously bring them about. We attract them to us. That is why scientific research uses a control group and is conducted by someone other than the person who designed the experiment. The double-blind study is not carried out by the researcher because he/she might unconsciously affect the results. It’s a mystery, but none the less true.

If there is something you really want to have happen, hold it in your consciousness like a bright jewel. And, by the way, Jim and Denise found the house yesterday, and were called while we were at dinner last night by their realtor to say their offer had been accepted. Oh, yeah. Weird world.

                                                  In the Spirit,
