Creative
by Nature
“I’m
just someone who likes cooking and for whom sharing food is a form of expression.”
Maya
Angelou
Most
people who are creative by nature have many avenues of expression. My friend,
Ladonna, is an internationally known improvisational musician who plays all kinds
of instruments—from violin, to harmonium, to piano, to didgeridoo, and kalimba.
She can even make music with a flour sifter! And she writes stories incredibly
well. As folks around here say, “It ain’t right.” She was also my first yoga
teacher. Creative people are doers by nature. They like to have their hands
busy, and they enjoy making things—almost anything. It’s a particular neural
network that produces a Van Gough, or a Picasso, or a Maya Angelou, of course,
but the fact is we are all creative by nature.
Not everyone is a maker
of masterpieces, or a prodigy like Ladonna, but just about anyone can follow a
recipe and put together a fabulous dinner. It helps to have a working knowledge
of food and seasonings that go well together, but it’s not imperative. If you can
read and measure, you can cook. There are many things we do that are creative,
but we don’t recognize them as such. My cousin, Sandy, for instance, is a
shopper at thrift stores. She “works” the shelves and is adept at finding things
that will resell on e-bay for triple the price on them. She does the research on
every item, establishes the provenance, and then resells them. She doesn’t
think of that as creative, but it is.
The person who can arrange
a wall of photographs of various sizes and shapes, so that they are balanced
and show controlled disorder has perspective. Being able to match
clothing colors, patterns, and textures, is an act of creativity. The ability
to wash, wax and polish a car, or frame a door, or turn a clay pot, or plant a
flower garden are all acts of creativity. Don’t think of yourself as a
non-creative person. Just look around you and identify how your personal brand
of creativity is expressed. And, then do it whenever you can. Creativity is our
connection to the Source. It is an expression of soul. And it’s as individual
and unique as your fingerprints. You create you today and have fun doing it!
In the Spirit,
Jane
