Your
Secret Shelter
“All
through your life your soul takes care of you…your soul is alive and awakened,
gathering, sheltering, and guiding your ways and days in the world. In effect,
your soul is your secret shelter.”
John
O’Donohue (Anam Cara)
When my
soul needs a good dose of encouragement, I pull up John O’Donohue’s quotes. For
me, his words are like breathing pure oxygen. Even though he’s no longer with
us in person here on the earth, his great love remains and is channeled through
his prayers and blessings. As he wrote in Anam Cara, “This love is the
deepest power of prayer.” This is true for all our prayers—the words are irrelevant
if there is no love behind them.
Today
is Sabbath. We don’t recognize it so much anymore, thanks to Amazon. There was
literally a delivery truck on my street at 10:00 o’clock last night, and they
begin by seven every morning, including Sunday. We have grown so comfortable with, and oriented toward, these commercial intrusions that our poor souls
have a hard time keeping us focused on our life’s real work—which, as you know,
has nothing to do with anything commercial.
O’Donohue said, “behind
the façade of your life there is something beautiful, good and eternal happening.”
We rush though our days without noticing for the most part, but our soul
is hard at work to keep us safe long enough to achieve what we came here to
learn. After all, “Your soul knows the geography of your destiny.” (O’Donohue)
Our soul whispers to us, “turn here, go there, meet this person,” and all the
while we think we’re in charge.
Because
nature is the physical representation of the bounty of our souls, we might take
time on this sabbath day to notice it. To sit with it and truly look with our eyes,
both external and internal, and see what is right in front of us—because most
of the time, we’re oblivious to it. Tonight, before you fall asleep, ask
yourself this question: “What did I really see today?” (O’Donohue) Maybe
the dream- maker will show you what is important to remember. Your soul chooses
the language of your dreams, so it’s a good idea to pay attention.
In
the Spirit,
Jane
