Celebrate
Life
“And so
with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on trees,
just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction
that life was beginning over again with the summer.”
F. Scott
Fitzgerald
Memorial Day weekend in
the US is the kick-off of summer. School is out, the beach awaits,
and the world is our oyster. What is it about summer that makes
everything seem better? Fertility! The world surrounding us is
deeply, abundantly, unreservedly fertile. That makes us feel young
and fertile too. This is the mating season for all beings, and even
if we're not in mating mode, the sap rises and we feel lush and
eager.
If you are wondering what
such talk has to do with spirituality, I would say to you,
“Everything!” This libidinal energy that surges in every living
thing in summer, that causes the plants to grow and flower, birds to
sing, and rams to snort and clash their horns together is nothing
short of the creative power of the universe. It is the same for
us—since of course, we are part of that universe.
There is an old fashioned
word, fecundity, that is rarely used any more because it carries the
whiff of taboo. It means the ability to produce an abundance of
offspring; to be fertile and productive. That is the energy of
summer. This is the season of great optimism, when ideas rise like
the sap in a tree, and all movement is upward and outward. We feel
our mood improve, our energy surge, and excitement for what may be
coming that's new and delicious.
One might describe the
energy of summer as a soaring of spirit, because we feel alive in a
way we do not feel in winter. I say to you: Go with it! Enjoy it!
Sing, dance, let the forces of nature flow through you! This is our
soul's sacred celebration of life.
In the Spirit,
Jane
