Pilgrim People

Fiery Pillar

In the midst of new dimensions, in the face of changing ways. Who will lead the pilgrim peoples wandering in their separate ways?

[Refrain] God of rainbow, fiery pillar, leading where the eagles soar. We your people, ours the journey now and ever, now and ever more.”
Julian Rush “In the Midst of New Dimensions” (1985)

If ever there was a hymn for our time, this is it. So much is going on in the world, from wars to hurricanes, to fires and floods. The steady flow of people northward from war-torn areas and desperate circumstances is staggering. And yet, and yet...there is also so much goodness, so much progress. There is perhaps a sea change in human consciousness—we are waking up to the understanding that it is we who must make a difference.

Through the flood of starving people, warring factions and despair, Who will lift the olive branches? Who will light the flame of care?”

How can we, and by we, I mean you and me, make an impact on this world? We can support the peacemakers. We can give what we can to the people on the front lines. We can understand that arrogance and macho-mindedness are what got us into this, and only humility and mutual respect will get us out. We must hold out the olive branch, and light the flame of care.

As we stand a world divided, by our own self-seeking schemes, Grant that we, your global village might envision wider dreams.”

Those of us who are distant from the problems can pray, and pray some more, every day and at all times. Send out those energetic vibrations of support and good will. Think about, and hold in your heart, the peoples caught in the middle of such untenable conditions. Never underestimate the power of love.

...We your people, ours the journey now and ever, now and ever more.”
