Renewal
“The
care of the Earth is our most ancient and most worthy, and after all,
our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it and
foster its renewal is our only hope.”
Wendell
Berry
Today,
on the Christian calendar, is Good Friday. People around the world
will hold remembrance services, sometimes silent observation, of
the death of Jesus. They will walk the stations of the cross, and
repeat the words spoken on that treacherous journey to Golgotha.
Today is also the beginning of our annual renewal. We'll celebrate
Easter on Sunday, and Spring will be official.
I
look out from my porch this morning, and see trees dressed in lime
green, the air reflecting it as wave upon wave of pollen drifts and
dusts all and everything. Renewing, replenishing. The day-lilies and
hosta spread their newness above the mulch, and roses show red-veined mini-leaves. Little magenta sprouts emerge from the Japanese
maple, and the pansies, beleaguered all winter, boast bold purple
blooms. Flowers of the red-bud tree completely obscure its bark. The
ever dependable Earth wakes to yet another year.
Let
us venture forth and renew as well. Let us rejoice, and plant, and
cherish the beauty spread before us—a gift, a feast, a blessing
beyond compare. It is Spring! Alleluia!
In
the Spirit,
Jane
