Enchantment
“Enchantment
is a spell that comes over us, an aura of fantasy and emotion that
can settle on the heart and either disturb it or send it into rapture
and reverie.”
Thomas
Moore (The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life)
We
all enter into enchantment at some point in our lives—some of us,
many times. Take, for instance, when we fall in love; we quite simply
go crazy. Suddenly the whole world is a splendid celebration of life;
we're giddy and stupid. We can't sleep and can't eat; our minds are
given over in totality to the object of our infatuation. A spell has
been cast, and we are flies in its web.
Occasionally,
we happen upon a scene so beautiful that for a time, we are
transported out of our ordinary existence into a world of beauty and
magic. One such occasion that I recall vividly occurred in the
Arizona desert, south of Tucson; I walked out of the dinning room to
a sunset that was quite simply breath-taking. I stood rooted to the
spot until the very last slip of color faded from the sky. For all of
that time, I was only eyes and emotion. Every vestige of personality
receded into the shadows and ceased to exist.
We
don't have to lose ourselves completely to experience the magic that
surrounds us, but we have to be awake and aware. Sitting on my porch
this morning, sunlight beams through the new green leaves of
a tree in my back yard. It is as though they are lit from within. As
I lift my eyes, I see this same phenomenon in all the trees within
view in my neighborhood. Stage lighting that only the god of beauty
could invent.
Today,
allow enchantment to find you. Wake up to the lavish beauty all
around you. Refresh your soul with it and give thanks.
In
the Spirit,
Jane
