Grace
and Good Humor
“Everyone
is flailing through this life without an owner's manual, with
whatever modicum of grace and good humor we can manage.”
Anne
Lamott
It's
a “two-cup” morning. Liza had one of her “hippity-hop”
nights—she was up woofing at shadows and sounds multiple times
during the night, and finally got me up to take her outside before
five. She hears things that only a pointy-eared demon can hear, and
no amount of shouting on my part will keep her quiet. In her
pint-sized self, she bears the soul of the Mastiff she must have been
in a previous lifetime. I'm exhausted—she's now sleeping peacefully
at my feet. Sigh.
It's
hard to manage grace and good humor when you've been up all night,
much less in the face of the terrible carnage and relentless war that
consumes our world. But what other choice do we have? We mortals can
only put in our time, go and vote for people we know are going to
serve themselves first from the great stockpot that is government
everywhere, and hope that someone in that morass will have a beating
heart. We hold onto faith because faith is all we have to hold onto.
See where I go when I'm tired—straight to cynicism.
The
fact is that where there is faith, there is always hope. We rally
each and every day because we hope for a better life for our children
and grandchildren no matter where we live on this blue planet. We may
not have an owner's manual, but we love this odd old world, warts and
all. Everyday there are lessons to be learned, grace and good humor
to share, and gratitude to express. Carry this consciousness with you
today, and give it as a gift to the people you meet. It is what we
can do to make this world a better place.
In
the Spirit,
Jane
