Beauty all around.

Smell the Roses

There's so much to appreciate about my life every single day, and I make a big point of taking time to smell the roses, and noticing how lucky I am. I never want to take that for granted.” Josie Maran

I cut the first roses of the season yesterday. Every year, I think this paltry rose bush is dead, so I cut it way back. Then in spring it magically comes back to life and produces these enormous blooms. They are fragrant enough to scent the whole house. Looking at them on my kitchen counter this morning, I remembered how important it is to take time to appreciate the small blessings that are all around us everyday.

It is so easy to get caught up in the turmoil of life. If you watch the news, you are intimately familiar with tragedies unfolding all around the globe. It's excruciating to watch Korean families whose precious children went down in the ferry boat on their way to a holiday; and the unrest and looming battle in Ukraine, and the monstrous civil war in Syria, the avalanche in Nepal, and the people watching their homes and loved ones being dug from the mud in Oso. There is so much pain and suffering that we can forget there is also beauty and joy, there is also new life. The very fact of the despair makes it all the more important to grab life where you find it.

We must have periods of darkness; and in that darkness even the glow of one candle can light the way. We must also have joy and beauty; which are always present if you search for them. There is a season for everything, and this is the season for roses.
