“You
don't have to take this journey, she said. You don't have to travel
around searching for spiritual spots. All the wisdom, the
experiences, the spiritual places you seek on this quest are within
you.”
Melody
Beattie (Journey to the Heart)
Sometimes
we think of spiritual places as being far away from us—places we
have to travel long distances to visit. Like Sedona, or Lourdes, or
India. I have gone on journeys to the desert, to the mountain, to the
ocean, looking for spiritual connection, and especially, for the
peace that comes from being in close proximity to Spirit. But the
truth is, Spirit is everywhere; we don't have to go looking far from
home. We cannot be dis-connected, so there is no need to search for
connection.
It
does, however, refresh the mind to travel to other places. And more
than that, it clears the space and eliminates the usual distractions
that draw us away from our inner journey. We designate other places
as “spiritual spots” because when we are there, we turn our attention
to Spirit. It is not the place so much as it is who we
become in the place and the reverence we bring with us.
We
can clear the space at home for our quest if we so desire. Instead of
loading up the car and heading to the mountain top, we can put a rug
down on the floor, and establish a small altar where we go at a
designated hour each day. We can travel within to the place of wisdom
and tranquility. It may take a little time and practice to allow
ourselves to eliminate the distractions and declare sacred space, but
it can be done. We don't need AAA or a Range Rover to get there, we
just need a deep desire for peace.
In
the spirit,
Jane
