Prayer
for the Midterms
“May
you know tender shelter and healing blessing
when
you are called to stand in the place of pain.
May
the places of darkness within you be surprised by light…”
John
O’Donohue (Prayer Blessing for Difficult Times)
Many of
us are dreading the mid-term elections. Whoever sought to confuse our system of
government and thus undermine our sense of security, has succeeded. At this
point, we don’t know—at least, I don’t know—what is true and what isn’t, so I
have to go with my gut. Some of us—who, to me, are the scariest of all—believe we
have all the answers and possess the unvarnished truth, so we can vote with
exuberance and then claim fraud if we lose. These are indeed troubled times.
When I
am worried and confused, I go to the Source of prayer itself. Since I have no
idea what’s right, and since I believe a paradigm is working through us that I am
not privy to, I will trust that Source to know what comes next. I strongly believe
in Karmic consequences and know that we have much to atone for. There’s a long
list of wrongdoing that some of us see as triumphs, and an even longer list of
wrongdoing that we are oblivious to. I won’t bother to list them since I know
that you have your own lists.
Here’s
a prayer for Tuesday:
Almighty Source of Love, help us to be
steadfast in our commitment to good will, and honor of the high purpose of our
calling to be a light in the world. Help us to put aside all negative emotions—greed,
hatred, bias, prejudice, grandiosity—and come to the voting booth as we would come to an altar, with much humility and an open heart. May this country be spared
disaster. May we grow wiser and kinder in the process. Amen
I wish
you well. Please vote. Regardless of what you believe, go and vote. That’s what
democracy requires.
In
the Spirit,
Jane
