Major
Transition
“When
our institutions lack movement to propel them forward, the Spirit, I believe
simply moves around them, like current flowing around a rock in a stream…without
the soul work that teaches us to open our deepest selves to God and ground ourselves
in love, no movement will succeed and no institution will stand…it is the
linking of action and contemplation, great work and deep spirituality that keep
goodness, rightness, beauty, and aliveness flowing.”
Brian
McLaren
This is
election day, 2022—the midterms. I am praying for record voter turnout because
this seems like a pivotal election no matter how you vote.
I listened to several of
Caroline Myss’ podcasts yesterday because I believe she has a grip on what’s
happening from a cosmic perspective. She’s clairvoyant in the truest sense of
the word. One of the things she says about this moment in time is that we, the
people of planet Earth, are going through the biggest transition in the history
of humanity. Everything is in flux—the health of our planet, the safety of our
environment, our concepts of sexuality and gender, our systems of governance,
our religious institutions, our ideas about family and coupling, our consumer
economy, and the truth about our history. All the ordinary foundational themes
we have taken for granted forever are in transition. I have a friend who when life
gets crazy, says, “Somebody must’a shook the nut-tree.” Well, here we are, being
bombarded by nuts on every side.
We are going through a
period of massive transition; no one knows the whole story of what is happening,
and no one knows how it will shake out, or when it will end. And we wonder why
we are so tired, so anxious. Our sleep is interrupted and our ability to function
is at half-mast. More people have told me, “I can’t concentrate” in the last
year than in the rest of my life put together. All this change, all this “fluxing,”
is energetic in nature (as is everything in the universe) and we are caught up
in the energy vortex of transformation. Spirit will have its way, as McLaren
says. If we oppose it, or try to obstruct its movement, it will flow around us like
water running downhill. Those of us who are paying attention will feel the
current more clearly, but unless we make ourselves leaf-like, open, floatable, willing
to be moved, we will not understand where it’s taking us.
What do we do in this
moment? Vote. Pray. Pay attention. And hang on for the biggest roller-coaster
ride of your life. At the same time, take some deep breaths and know that “The
universe is unfolding as it should…Be at peace with your soul.” (Max Ehrmann,
“Desiderata”) Whatever happens, we will learn some major lessons from this wild
ride. Buckle up.
In the Spirit,
Jane
