Nature’s
Cathedral
“Earth
and sky, woods and fields, lakes and rivers, the mountain and the sea, are excellent
schoolmasters, and teach us more than we could learn from books.”
John
Lubbock
The lake is flat calm
this morning. The sound of distant boats breaks the silence and stirs crows
into action. Coffee pot gurgles to life and soon the smell of bacon sizzling in
a skillet will complete the picture of a perfect autumn weekend. My friends have
three scotch collies prowling the grounds like a pack of wild Lassies, as white
herons skim across the slate-grey surface. What a beautiful day to wake up.
This earth is meant to be
a cathedral of creation. It teaches us so many lessons—like natural diversity
of species, peacefulness of mind that produces non-violence, and immersion into
beauty to refresh body and soul. One can sit on the dock and let the movement
of the water lull. Thoughts arise in answer to long asked questions, answers not
found in the noisy, boisterous city. One can study the variation of light
ripples and dark patches on the surface of the lake and learn about Fresnel’s equation—how
the light reflects differently depending on your position.
This is a place where
mindfulness comes of its own volition, no practice necessary. Just sit and let
the ripples mesmerize and inform. Clear headed, you return to everyday reality
with new insights and a calm core. Breathe, close your eyes, and see what I
see.
In the Spirit,
Jane
