The Quest for Consciousness

                                                                      Solid Ground

“That life is a journey of becoming conscious might once have meant nothing more to you than any other sentence on a page. Now, it determines the course of each day of your life and has become the scale against which you measure every action. So how, exactly, should you explore that truth and how is that truth exploring you?”

Caroline Myss

All of us wonder at some point, usually when we are at the bottom of our well emotionally, “What is this all about? Why am I here? What am I supposed to do?” Some of us have the strong sense that someone or something is following close behind and occasionally tapping us on the shoulder to ask, “What are you doing? Why did you just do that?” Then we are assailed by questions and doubts about the meaning of life—our life, specifically—and how we can figure out what is expected of us. If any of this sounds familiar to you, it is because you are on a spiritual journey.

Caroline Myss, who devotes her life to encouraging and teaching others how to be in relationship with themselves, with the divine, and how to explore and understand what life is calling them to, says this: “Life is a journey of becoming conscious—nothing more, nothing less.” That’s our job here in the Earth School. That’s why we’re here—to become more conscious, and by doing so, to further the evolution of human consciousness collectively.

It’s confusing to us because we have relied upon our five senses to guide us for most of our existence, and now we need more. Now we need to understand at our core that guidance exists that we cannot locate with our senses. The only way to access that guidance is through asking and listening within—and then following through with what we are shown. It’s a very different way of being in the world—one not based on thinking and planning, but on perceiving; not linear, not always “rational” and not always reasonable. It’s based upon trust.

The reason for doing this is to preserve the species—to move us along to a consciousness that considers our place in the world, and our link in the chain of existence. We must become conscious in order to stop the destructive things we do to the earth and to each other. Wars are no longer winnable, so now we must find a peaceful means of coexisting. We cannot solve differences by the usual means of conquest and occupation; we now must learn to negotiate. We cannot dominate and subdue; now we must provide for all through sharing and cooperation. This requires a whole new set of skills and a new understanding of life.

The adversities that we are enduring right now, with fires, pandemics, heat waves, rising oceans, and enormous storms are the way the earth speaks to us and shows us what must happen if we are to survive. We must move beyond sparing and taking sides and living from our petty grievances. We must realize in our deepest selves that we are truly all in this together, and consciousness of that fact is essential to each of us and all of us.

You may think that you have no ability to impact any of this, but that is not true. Your job is to become conscious—of yourself, of your actions in the world, and of the guidance that is knocking at the door of your heart. Trust that if you open that door, you will be shown the way forward. The solid ground you are seeking is right where you are—right where you have always been.

                                        In the Spirit,
