Everyone needs a...

Strong Ego

Your capacity to thrive depends on an unshakable belief in yourself, knowing your worth, and living like the Universe has your back.”

Robert Ohotto

If that quote above sounds like pure egotism to you, it is not. We (I think, especially women) have been taught the Judeo-Christian ethic that humility is a virtue. “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before the fall.” (Proverbs 16:18) And, that is true, if you equate pride with hubris, but if pride is equated with confidence, it is not egotism. And, in fact, when a person needs to compliment themselves all the time, cannot tolerate criticism and requires adoration from everyone around them, that is symptomatic of an exceptionally weak ego, and not a strong one.

Ego has gotten a bad rap in our modern culture. It is, in fact, an essential part of a healthy psyche. Robert Ohotto describes the ego as the pen that conveys messages from the soul to the outside world. One must have a dependable ego to represent themselves as credible and stable, and to understand and live out their own purpose in the Earth School. It goes along with Jesus teaching: “Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bushel. Instead, they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.” (Matt. 5:15)

Do not be afraid to speak your truth, but before you do, know that it is indeed, your truth and not someone else’s. Unless one knows oneself intimately, one cannot have a strong enough ego to stand in the world and speak up. We have had the good fortune to witness some people who embody this strength of character—you can name the most famous—Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr. Greta Thunberg, and most recently, John Lewis. We are galvanized by their presence in any gathering; we recognize their strength and the power of their convictions. We follow them because we see the gravity of their souls in the words that they speak and the solidness of their devotion to their path.

We are sorely in need of the people with soul gravitas to step up and be heard. You can recognize them by the plainness of their speech, the lack of hyperbole and contradiction, and their dedication to bringing light to whatever they are involved in. You can be one of those people if you believe in yourself enough to speak the words your soul whispers in your ear. Know this for certain: when you do, the Universe has your back.

                                                  In the Spirit,
