Happenstance and Coincidence

Serendipity

Along the way, we are humbled to discover that we are not gods who carve out rivers, but luminous beings working our way in the stream.”
Mark Nepo (Weekly Reflection; “The Purpose of Will;” excerpt from Drinking from the River of Light: The Life of Expression)

I love the fact that the nature of reality is to provide serendipity, or as the Jungians call it, synchronicity. After writing about rivers and fish yesterday, I opened Mark Nepo's Weekly Reflection this morning and read about "luminous beings working their way through the stream." I always take these synchronous events as the universe giving a little pat on the back—and “atta-boy,” of sorts. Look for this to happen in your life when you pray for something without equivocation, or when you make a decision that is in line with your spiritual growth. Things will begin to happen that reflect that intention. We think of them as coincidences, but they are more than that; they are little nudges from the universe to let you know you're going in the right direction.

We are not gods who carve out rivers, but that does not mean we cannot be in the flow of the river of life. In the words of Marianne Williamson, “Ego says, 'Once everything falls into place, I'll feel peace.' Spirit says, 'Find your peace, and everything will fall into place.'” Everything that the ego controls in us wants to increase our power in the world, our standing and status. But if that is not in line with the needs of our soul, the pursuit of it will bring only frustration and failure. Simply asking to be shown the way, to be shown what comes next, and then trusting that you will be is the key to a fulfilling life. And, truly, to an exciting life—perhaps not in the Las Vegas style of excitement, but in the kind that satisfies and brings harmony.

Today, ask the universe for guidance and then be open to seeing it in synchronous ways and events. Spirit's “bit-coin” is happenstance, serendipity and meaningful wrong turns. Don't worry that you feel a bit lost—that's when you'll be found. We're all just along for the ride and it's a fun ride if you've got the heart for it.
