Deeper
Meaning
“Jesus
doesn't divide the world up into the common and the sacred; he gives
us eyes to see the sacred in the common. He comes to help us see
more, more how they actually are: that they matter, that they're
connected, and that they're headed somewhere.”
Rob
Bell (What We Talk About When We Talk About God)
I
don't know about you, but it's easy for me to be like a mule in the
traces, walking the same ground day after day, oblivious to the
deeper meanings of things. A meal is just a meal, a phone call is
just that. I do my work, I run errands, and walk the dog. I have to
consciously bring my awareness into the moment in order for it to
reveal its deeper meaning to me.
Think
for a moment of the Last Supper that Jesus had with his disciples. He
took the bread, gave thanks, and broke it, then handed it to them
with the words, “Take it, this is my body.” and then he took the
cup of wine, saying, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is
poured out for many.” And they all drank from it. (Mark 14:22-24)
With that simple gesture and that simple meal, he changed forever
what it means to have communal meal; to have a sacred experience in
community with other like minded people. There were no miracles, no
lights flashing, bells ringing—just a simple meal with a deeper
meaning.
We
can have a daily experience of the sacred by carrying an attitude of
holiness into the day with us. By keeping in mind that there is no
designated territory that is more hallowed than any other, we can
make sacrosanct that which is common. If we are looking for deeper
meaning, we will find it.
In
the Spirit,
Jane
