Welcome to Spring!

Spring Has Sprung

“Look at the fig tree:
when it sets out its tiniest green leaves
you know—you can see for yourself—
that summer is already near.”
Luke 21:29-30

Happy first day of spring! When I woke this morning, that hip new song ‘We Are Young’ by Fun. was playing loudly in my head. I’m beginning to think that waking with songs in my head may be the last gasp of some lyric-driven neurons in my aging brain, but on the off chance that it isn’t, I try to make connections.

The song’s chorus goes:

“Tonight
We are young.
We can burn brighter
Than the sun.”

Isn’t that what happens to us in spring, whether we’re young or old? We get a little ‘giddy-up’ in our step; feel a bright little spark like a striking match at our core. Spring sends the sap up in the trees and in us, too. The mockingbirds outside my open window are in full throat, driven by their annual mating madness. The sap’s up in them, too.

Spring, and the return of long, light-filled days, brings a kind of optimism that nothing else can touch. Not even Prozac! We see it in our energy level, in our economy, and in our eagerness to take on new projects. Everything we have been putting off because it was too cold, or too dreary, now seems possible.

Later, we may pay for this early, opulent spring, but for now, let’s just enjoy it—high pollen counts and all. Break out the antihistamines and get out there and soak it up.

In the spirit,
Jane
