Age
of Aquarius
“The
great sun, moving in the heavenly house, has left the House of the Fishes for
the House of the Water-bearer. In the coming age shall humanity be holy, and in
the perfection of the human shall we find the humane.”
Dion
Fortune (The Sea Princess)
Apparently,
the Age of Aquarius is upon us, though exact dates for the move are difficult
to pin down. According to the Mistic Minds website, the term Age of Aquarius
was coined in 1730 by William Lilley. The event of the sun’s movement into a
new age occurs approximately every 2,150 years, and we, on Planet Earth are
currently entering Aquarius. True confession: I know very little about
astrology (can you tell?) But I’m curious about it, and now and then I poke
about enough to pick up a thought or two.
When
reading this morning, I found that for each Age—that is when the sun moves into
a new House—different parts of our personalities are expressed (or perhaps,
different parts of our psyche develop). Aquarians are curious, inventive,
intelligent, individualistic, humanitarian, and ahead of their time. The sign
Aquarius, the water-bearer, includes people born between January 20-February 18th.
They are original thinkers who strive
for independence. They are, or may be, rebels who demand complete freedom from
constrictions, and have a strong desire to reform society. Sounds familiar,
doesn’t it?
Aquarius
is an air sign, and people born under this sign have an affinity for
technology, science, and pioneering discoveries. Many people now believe we are
entering a new paradigm where technology has evolved to help us connect to one
another and when human consciousness has awakened to a higher understanding of
our interconnectedness. In the Age of Aquarius, all people will be treated
equally. According to the Mistic Minds
website, we will put an end to the impediments to evolution that have held us
back for far too many ages—racism, religious intolerance, nationalism, and
agism, which it terms, “irrational beliefs.”
We will
become humane—imagine that. I don’t know what you think about astrology—I have
never pursued it enough to educate myself. However, the description of Aquarius
sounds so like the dichotomy we see in society today, I find myself interested
in knowing more. We are awakening to a higher understanding of what it means to
be human—that is humane—but at the same time, we demand individuality, freedom from
any constraints, and we want to reform society. The problem is that we have two
different understandings of what that reform would look like.
Whatever
Age we are in, astrologically speaking, we could all benefit from changes in
our trend toward exclusion, nationalism, authoritarianism, and racial animus.
If those traits end with the Age of Aquarius, I’m all for it. Let this be the “dawning
of the Age of Aquarius” for the betterment of humankind and of planet
earth. May it be so.
In
the Spirit,
Jane
