I
Believe in Magic
“I
believe and therefore anything is possible.” (Anonymous)
Last
night, while it was still daylight, I sat on the porch with friends Ann and
Ellen. Out the corner of my eye, I saw brown wings rise and looked into the
backyard to see a large, barred owl flying up to the cable line and perching
there with his back to us. What happened next was pure magic. All the little
birds whose nests are nearby encircled the owl and fussed at him. They did not fly
away; they flew toward him even though he was ten times their size and had a
merciless hooked beak. They lined up on the wires and sounded the alarm that
called in the larger birds—jays and crows came to the rescue. When the owl tired
of their screeching, he simply flew away, the “enforcer birds” in pursuit, and
the scene instantly returned to normal. Even birds, the remnant of dinosaurs,
know how to cooperate when the need arises.
I
believe in the balance and wisdom of the natural world and therefore, I believe
that humanity can find that same balance. We are more competitive and more diverse
in our creative abilities to be sure, but when necessity calls, the solutions
become clearer—we must stick together and help each other or all of us will go
down together. The birds showed us how last night right here in my backyard. I
wish you had been here to see it.
In
the Spirit,
Jane
