Take
the Next Step
“Be
simple and always take the next step. You needn’t see it in advance, but you
can look back at it afterwards. There’s no ‘how’ of life, one just does it.”
Carl
Gustav Jung
Do you
ever feel like you’re batting around in the dark? Do you ask yourself the
question, “What am I doing?” or “What am I supposed to be doing?” or “Why did I
do that?” Am I the only person who asks these questions? I doubt it. We humans
feel like we SHOULD know what the heck we’re doing, and where the heck we’re
headed, and what on earth is going on, but sometimes we don’t. Sometimes we
simply have to take a step in the dark and trust that we are where we’re supposed
to be, doing what we’re supposed to be doing.
It’s a
leap of faith, I know. Life constantly confronts us with gaps in knowing what
comes next and expects us to trust it and take the next step. When we are
secure in our own skin, we can take that step, make that leap, without fear.
When we lack confidence, it is harder. For me, there are certain areas in life
where I seem to make bad decisions and I tend to avoid those. That avoidance is
not moving me forward, only sideways. There is a difference between making impulsive
decisions—usually a bad idea—and making strong decisions—usually well thought
out. We get into trouble, or at least I do, when I confuse those two. So, I’ve
developed an intuitive method of decision making—my insides have to be in agreement.
Those
of us who are more right-brained than left usually feel most secure in our
decision making when things line up—head, heart, and gut, in agreement.
Sometimes it takes a long time to achieve that, but when it synchs up, we know
it. We can go from No to Yes and feel good about our ability to make important
decisions. When we are out of balance, when the head says yes, but the heart
says no, or vice versa, or when our gut is saying, put on the breaks, we know
that more time is needed. More time to listen and learn, more time to ask
questions and do some research. But in the final analysis, a leap of faith is
still required.
Many
good decisions are made by people who bat around in the dark for a while. Trust
yourself, trust your gut, trust life to move you forward. As Jung said, we don’t
have to have the answers, we just have to trust that life does.

the Spirit,
