The Question Is, Are We...

Better Than This

“Be the most ethical, the most responsible, the most authentic you can be with every breath you take, because you are cutting a path that others will follow.”

Ken Wilber

I still have a headache from watching what happened at the US Capital yesterday. In the process of thugs breaking windows and terrorizing members of Congress and their staffs, I heard numerous people say, “we’re better than this.” My question is, “Are we?” Are we better than this when seventy million of us voted to keep the person (who shall not be named) in power who was behind this invasion, who had stoked the fires of anarchy only a few minutes before? For me, the most amazing thing is that a large percentage of us still believe the lies that particular human being tells in spite of multiple levels of proof to the contrary. Are we better than this? How delusional do you have to be to keep following such a man?

For the sake of our democracy, which is now on life support, I hope that he is rendered inoperative until his term ends on Jan. 20th. For the soul of this nation, I pray we watched that debacle unfold yesterday with the degree of horror it deserved. There was nothing about that insurrection that was worthy of praise, let alone the love some of us choose to express for those who participated in it. They are not heroes; they accomplished nothing except to make America look like a collection of mindless thugs. That is neither heroic nor legitimate.

What we do have now is an opportunity to decide, to choose, whether we want to be the country we imagine ourselves to be, or not. We can choose to put this entire nightmare behind us, dig through the fog of memory to recall who we are supposed to be, who we think we are, and do our best to resuscitate that America. I pray it is still viable. I do believe that we hold the muscle memory for decency and respectability. Now, it is time to truly become “better than this.”
