Keep the Faith

Wild Peach Trees

“When the world turns completely upside down, we’ll live among the wild peach trees, miles from town.”

Elinor Wylie

I felt like giving you a lovely summer image on this cold winter day. Living among the wild peach trees sounds amazing to me—especially if they are miles from town. During this pandemic created home exile, we need to keep our focus on the future, when there is a universally dispersed vaccine, and we can once again walk in the world without masks and hug the people we love.

The world as we know it has turned completely upside down and because of that we are disoriented. Like Alice in Wonderland, we can say, “I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have changed several times since then.” (Lewis Carroll) And not only that, but for those of us in home confinement, we also ask, “Now, what day is this?” not because we are senile but because our days are all the same.

In times like these, we must keep the faith—yes, in our higher power, but also in the cycles of life. Winter is always followed by spring and the earth always tilts on its axis and gives us warmth and new life. Do not forget that. We must look for beauty and when we find it, we must soak it in. Right now, for instance, I am gazing out my study window at a pale pink sunrise through streaks of clouds with blue sky peeking through. I know that it is 37 degrees out there, but that should not keep me from enjoying this beautiful moment that grace has provided.

In our “turned upside down” world, there is still beauty, there is still love, and there is still community. I encourage each of us to reach out today to people we love, who we are concerned about, and most of all, to people who love us. Love is not only conveyed through hugs and kisses, but through words, and breath, and eyes. Did you know that the color of your aura changes to the same pink as this sunrise when you are in the presence of someone you love? So, here’s to summer “among the wild peach trees miles from town.” May we all grow rosy with love.

                                                  In the Spirit,

                                                  Jane
