Wait
and Watch
“Hope
begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do
the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: you don’t
give up.”
Anne
Lamott
I’ve
been working on this piece that has a fairytale quality about it. I never know
where images come from—they just seem to rise out of the unconscious and I try
to allow them to take shape without getting in the way. Typically, I have no
idea what they will become until they are finished. This one started with a
dark, dark background. I didn’t like it, so I put it away for a while. When I
pulled it out again, it began to form itself into a forest, and like in fairytales,
it was a dark forest. But then this tree of light grew in the middle and took
on a life of its own. I think it is an image that represents our time, and,
even though it isn’t finished yet, I wanted to share it with you.
The
dawn does come—always. It may only give us a clearer view of the rubble
surrounding us, but it provides light enough to see where we’re going. We know
how to clean up the mess because we’ve done it before. We could only have
gotten to that light by walking through this darkness. But now, like the
children in this piece, we can hold hands and give each other courage. And, you
can see that the birds are there, so we know it’s safe. I believe it will take
us a while, but we will emerge from the dark forest into a new light of
kindness and unity.
There
is no magic involved, only faith. We must have faith in ourselves, in one
another and in the Creator to guide and sustain us through this period of
transition. We will create the light we need by trusting ourselves and our
leaders. We have the map; we have the compass, and we know which way to go. All
we have to do is show up and do the right thing with great heart. I have faith
in us.
In
the Spirit,
Jane
