Keep your heart and soul...

Open the Miracles

I keep my heart and my soul and my spirit open to miracles.”
Patrick Swayze

When was the last time you witnessed a miracle? I immediately jump to medical miracles—my son's surviving that accident a couple of weeks ago comes to mind. He's back at work this week, in brace and boot. I spoke with my friend, Isie, yesterday about her grandson, who spent three months in the hospital, some of it in a medically induced coma with machines keeping him alive. He's now beginning to walk on his own, and will return to school next month having somehow made up all the work he missed. Those are big miracles. But there are small miracles every day that we miss simply because we are not paying attention.

If you're an early riser, you know that we've been having the most amazing sunrises. Perhaps it's a trick of the atmosphere, humidity, cloud layering, but to me it seems miraculous to see, not just a light pink sky, but deep reds and oranges and breath-taking lavender rising in the east. My orchids are summering on the porch, and they express their appreciation by blooming wide open. I planted the root balls of Flox in the spring—just literally dug some holes and tossed them in—and now there is a patchwork of plants figuring out how to make their way to the light. Little miracles.

Perhaps keeping the heart, soul and spirit open to miracles is simply optimism, but it also requires that we pay attention to everyday events. We don't equate running into an old friend, or meeting someone for the first time as miraculous, but sometimes those unexpected encounters change our lives. Sometimes, we meet someone by chance, and in the instant we meet them know that this person, whom we didn't know existed even five seconds before, will influence everything we do for the rest of our lives. That qualifies as a miracle to me.

If we keep our souls open, if we are present in our bodies in the here and now, if we are conscious of the beauty and genius of creation, we will encounter miracles every single day. I hope you encounter one today. Be on the look-out.

                                                             In the Spirit,
                                                                 Jane
