Open
Door
“As a
broken door lets in the light,
a broken
heart lets in the world.
No one
likes this,
but we
can't grow without it.
And no
matter how we try,
we can't
hold on to everything...”
Mark Nepo
(excerpt from “The Ring of Rings”)
I wonder whether you feel
heartbroken when you watch the news. Do you watch and wonder where we
went wrong, when did we slide off the rails, when did our hearts
change? I hate to say it, but I don't believe that our current
president is solely responsible. He is, at least for me, a symptom of
the disease.
As miserable as this time
is for some of us, it is necessary for us to grow. We are being
offered an opportunity to make a decision about what we stand for and
how we want to move forward. Has consumerism found its bottom? Having
seen everything reduced to its value in the marketplace, including
our precious environment and an innocent human life, will we begin
the slow crawl back up? Will we regain, or forge anew, a moral
compass? This is a time of decision-making that truly matters.
For me, the soul of
America is at stake. The door is cracked open, light is seeping in.
We can face the future united and unafraid, or we can let those who
lead by lies and fear guide us into a basement without windows. I
have faith that we will allow the world in, open that door wider, and
live up to the image we have of ourselves as a beacon of hope. We
can't hold on to everything, but I am holding on to that. I hope you
are, too.
In the Spirit,
Jane
