Assignment for 2017:

Change the World

Changing the world begins with the very personal process of changing yourself; the only place you can begin is where you are, the only time you can begin is always now.”
Gary Zukav

So...Christmas is over and now we head into a new year. This one promises to be full of bombast and clashing personalities, not just in the United States, but all over the world. We seem to be in the midst of rising authoritarianism...again. Without getting into politics and who is right and who is wrong, let's take a look at what it says about the world soul.

There are two major energies in the human world: fear and love. Fear is personality based. It is the driving force within us that wants to control and conquer, that wants to possess and overpower, that believes anything less than winning, regardless of the consequences, is simply weakness and defeat. Fear gives rise to authoritarianism. Love is of the soul. Love recognizes equality, honors justice, and gives rise to authentic power. Love is egalitarian, inclusive, and spacious. As a species, we are trying to evolve our souls toward the energy of love, but in order to do that, we must overcome our fear-based personalities.

What tends to happen is that we make progress toward openness and universality, and then we experience losing control, and fear of that pulls us back into the desire for power. It seems like a no-win situation, but truly, it isn't. Each time we take two steps toward the power and energy of love, more of us get there, and fewer are pulled back into fear. There is a dynamic tugging forward and backward between the poles of love and fear, but each time, more people glimpse the possibility and promise of love. Evolution is not a straight line—it is a meander, zigzag, looping line. We make progress, we pull back, we make progress, we pull back. The image that comes to mind is one of fly fishing—in which you fling the line forward and back, each time letting out a little more, until it's long enough to land exactly where you want it. Eventually, we'll get there.

Sometimes, we humans have to be reminded of what fear looks like, and the terrible cost of it, in order to finally make the leap forward. There's never been a time like now to invest in evolution toward the soul. Start here, start now; don't judge, just get started on your personal work. Changing the world begins with each one of us.

                                                          In the Spirit,
