Viewing
Change
“The
natural ups and downs of life can either generate personal growth or
create personal fear. Which of these dominates is completely
dependent upon how we view change.”
Michael
J. Singer (The Untethered Soul)
One
of the loveliest sights I've ever seen occurred while on a ferry
leaving Ocracoke Island, one of the outer banks of North Carolina.
Well out into the Albemarle Sound, I looked back toward the island,
and saw a herd of wild ponies running along the sandy beach. It was a
moment of pure bliss at witnessing the joy of their freedom in the
simple act of running together. For me, it was a glimpse of
untethered soul, not bound by fear, nor anxious about tomorrow, but
purely in the moment.
Not
much in our world encourages that brand of optimism these days, and
perhaps never has. It is not something one can be given, but a
personal choice one makes. To live untethered is to live without
being governed by fear. When we see change all about us and within
us, instead of taking a defensive posture, we approach with
curiosity. We engage rather than backing away. The world is changing,
no matter how high we build the walls, nor how many guns we stash
away. In the face of change, we can either batten down the hatches
and fight to the death, or we can go about our lives. We can do the
sensible things that matter to us, help with what speaks to our
hearts, and give what we are able.
Change
is happening every minute of every day. This is the movement of a
living planet. How we relate to it determines the quality of our days
here.
In
the Spirit,
Jane
