There's nothing like a good pair of...

Windshield Wipers

Most of us have crabby days and an abundance of our own feelings to deal with. We don't need to let others splash their negative energy on us. We don't need to pick it up and carry it around. If someone splashes your windshield with mud while you're driving down the road, what do you do? You wash it off and go on your way.”
Melody Beattie (Journey to the Heart)

Thoughts, like everything else in this universe, are energy, and energy doesn't stop at solid barriers. In fact, there are no solid barriers when it comes to energy. Thought energy can pass right into us and swamp us in a nanosecond. It can move us from being in a perfectly good and positive mood into a hostile one in no time at all. Sometimes, there's just free-floating negativity all around us, and we unknowingly pick it up. Do you ever have days when you wake up grouchy, and all day long you're asking yourself, “What is the MATTER with me?” That's what I'm talking about.

This time of year, everyone seems to be rushed and irritable—more so than usual. They turn left in front of us, snatch the parking space we're waiting for, and glare at perfect strangers as though they're the bottom of the food chain. I can't explain why the “Season of Joy” brings out the worst in some folks, but it does. We can begin to shield ourselves from that by simply being conscious of it. Working with images is something I like to do, too. I used to tell my students to imagine being inside a golden egg of light, a shimmering oval force field. It repels negative energy. We hold the intention of being impervious to other people's “mud,” and then bring the image to mind of being surrounded by light, and that protects us. Energy follows intention.

The other thing we can do, as Melody Beattie says, is just wash it off. When you encounter hostility in other people or in yourself, just imagine a fine spray, or a gentle rain washing it away. I know all this sounds like magical thinking, but it isn't. In the same way we take responsibility for monitoring our words, and deeds, we can also take responsibility for the energy we put out, and take in. We do that with consciousness and intention.

Affirmation: “Today, I will wash other people's mud off my windshield and keep on going.”
