Detoxifying
“The
best way to detoxify is to stop putting toxic things into the body
and depend upon its own mechanisms.”
Andrew
Weil, M.D.
Dr.
Weil is an advocate for holistic medicine and a great believer in
natural solutions to health problems. Aerobic exercise for
depression, getting back into the kitchen and away from fast food, no
computer or TV late at night, integrative exercise that occurs in the
course of productive activity, and moving meditation are just a few
of his favorites. I happen to agree with much of what he espouses.
I
would extend the message regarding detoxifying the body to include
the spirit as well. If one wants to detoxify the emotions, for
instance, one should limit contact with toxic people and situations.
We should also examine our own perceptions, which may have become
toxic without our awareness.
We
humans are unduly influenced by news coverage, and media information.
No, I'm not one of those “liberal media” haters, who believe
there's a great conspiracy to embed any information with subliminal
messages to hypnotize the masses. But, I do think we allow various
types of media to influence our choices rather than individually
assessing what works for us. Every body/mind is different and getting
to know one's own is extremely important. One size does not fit all.
Most
of all, we could stop creating toxicity for ourselves with our words
and deeds, our unconscious thoughts and actions. We might want to
develop an inner hostility barometer that sounds a warning gong
every time we lapse into negative thinking, or get sucked into
conversations or situations that bring out the worst in us.
Especially during this political season, all of us, most especially
myself, need to check our prickly attitudes at the door. Since I'm
big on images, I think of it as a hat that one takes off and hangs on
a peg, or as a zipper that one simply zips shut. We can be
co-creators of toxic environments, or we can be peacemakers. It's up
to us!
In
the Spirit,
Jane
