Beauty
and Bread
“Everybody
needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where
nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.”
John
Muir
Now
and then, I feel like one of Liza's dog toys—ragged around the
edges, with missing pieces here and there. I become weary of body and
soul, aware that I'm pushing through physical and mental fatigue, and
not doing anything very well. I wonder whether you find yourself at
such a crossroad from time to time? When we arrive there, it's a good
idea to take a break.
I
know not everyone has the luxury of time off, and I don't either; but
here's the thing—when we refuse to listen to our body, it takes
things into its own hands, so to speak. We get sick, or we hurt
ourselves, we have accidents, our backs seize up, our neck stiffens,
our shoulders feel like He-Man is pounding them. Headaches ensue,
sleep becomes difficult, feet hurt, and stomachs burn. The body calls
a halt to the constant disregard, and puts us on notice that if we do
not heed that call, worse things will happen.
The
human body is a miracle. Its wisdom and ability to communicate is far
superior to anything that gets conjured up as words in that brain we
prize so much. All our connective tissue virtually glows with
information sharing that has no need to go through the central
nervous system for interpretation. But we have to listen; we have to
plug in our awareness cable, and let the two talk to each other. We
have to tap their phone lines.
For
the next week or so, I will be on a beach, writing, listening,
praying, and hopefully, playing. You will hear from me, but perhaps
not every day. Stay tuned. I send you blessings, and will happily
receive yours back.
In
the Spirit,
Jane
