A
Shared Life
“...When
we meet like this, I may not
have
the words, so let me say it now:
Nothing
compares to the sensation
of
being alive in the company of
another.
It is God breathing on
the
embers of our soul.”
Mark
Nepo ( excerpt from “The Way Under the Way” )
“Intense,”
is a good word for the way we come together with other human beings
whose souls are openly searching for meaning in this crazy world. We
skip all the small talk of time, and weather, and social connections,
and jump straight to the meat and marrow of heart. Immersed in
questions, we absorb answers through the very pores of our skin.
There is nothing in the world more intimate than two souls on the
same wave length, communicating with or without words.
There
is agony, too, in being open—we cannot shut out the wounds of the
world, cannot shield ourselves from injustice, and indifference. We
feel, we see, we experience with knowledge that we are part of the
problem, and part of the solution. But, we can share that burden with
others who are like-minded, and in doing so, find relief. Bonds are
forged that cannot be broken, though relationships may be brief.
Awareness of other hearts beating to the same rhythm, other minds
pondering the same questions, satisfies the soul. We are terrible
and wonderful, destructive and imaginative, caustic and caring, endlessly pushing forward and pulling back. What an incredible gift
is a human lifetime, shared.
In
the Spirit,
Jane
