Hands
“Behold
the hands, how they promise, conjure, appeal, menace, pray,
supplicate, refuse, beckon, interrogate, admire, confess, cringe,
instruct, command, mock...with a variation and multiplication of
variation that makes the tongue envious.”
Michel
de Montaigne
Hands
tell a great deal about a person. Just a glimpse can tell you
whether they are purely ornamental, or are the person's most useful
appendage. Hands speak more authentically than words. They tremble
when we're afraid, clinch when we're angry, flail when we're
distressed, touch our head when we're thinking, smack it when we
realize we've done something stupid. Most of us are so keyed into
verbal communication that we ignore our hands entirely. That's a mistake.
Hands
are directly inherited—I can look at mine and see my father's
identical ones in my mind. Their shape and texture, the rolls on the
knuckles, the squareness of the tips; these are his hands. They are
calloused and cracked, because, like him, I use them everyday. Whose
hands do you have?
Our
hands are the most potent part of the body for a multitude of reasons having nothing to do with strength or beauty. For one thing, they
have more nerve endings per square inch than any part of the body.
Their touch informs us because, not only do they act out our thoughts and emotions, they are also astute receivers of
information. They radiate energy that can expedite the repair of
broken bones and broken hearts, and soothe and calm a sick child.
How
we use our hands is just as important as how we use our mind, or our
voice. They can be used for good or ill. They can heal, or kill, or
steal. They are our most honest communicator. How will you use your
hands today?
In
the Spirit,
Jane
