Love

“Those
who contemplate the beauty of the Earth find reserves of strength
that will endure as long as life lasts.”

Yesterday,
I was driving along Altamont Road on the crest of Red Mountain, when
the sun broke through after weeks of glowering clouds. Instantly, the canopy above and all the green around me, that just
moments before had been a soggy mess, turned golden. The beauty of it
captured me. I stopped the car in the middle of the road to
take it in. It's stunning, isn't it, that even scrub-pines, fallen
trees, and wild, weedy grasses glisten like jewels in sunlight. Almost as though
there had been a master designer at work.
Today
is Earth Day. Trees will be planted, prayers spoken, songs sung.
Also, coal fired power plants, shale oil fields, feed lots, factory
stacks, and our very own garbage cans and automobiles will dump CO2
into the air we breathe. We humans have a long way to go to figure out
how to live symbiotically with our host. The cost of doing so is too
high...and apparently, cost is everything.
Lady
Bird Johnson said, “The environment is where we all meet; where we
all have a mutual interest; it is the one thing all of us share.”
We can't individually fix the world's environment, but we can do our
part. We can plant and recycle, conserve and reuse; we can repair
rather than replace, and donate rather than toss out. If enough of us
did our small share, it would add up to a something big, and who
knows, maybe even extend our time on this incredibly beautiful blue
planet. Happy Earth Day, everyone!
In
the Spirit,
Jane
