Got a Question?

Trust Your Gut

Intuition is the key to everything...I think you have an intellectual ability, but if you sharpen your intuition, which they say is emotion and intellect joining together, then a knowing occurs.”
David Lynch

Intuition is the key to everything. Call it going with your gut, following a hunch, listening to your heart, whatever—the intersection of intelligence and emotion is a potent place to be. One of the ways I listen to intuition, is by recording my dreams. Sometimes, they point to something directly, and sometimes indirectly, but taken as a whole, they are a sound guide.

Sometimes intuition moves us in one direction or another simply by troubling our minds. Something at the level of the navel is saying, “You should not do this. It's a bad idea.” Sometimes a spontaneous thought pops into our head unbidden, and we know beyond doubt that it is true. We may not know where it came from, but suddenly it's more obvious than the hand at the end of our arm.

I'm not saying that intelligence has no place in the arena—certainly, it is essential. But, in my case, if my head is telling me one thing, and my gut is telling me another, I trust my gut. Spiritual teacher, Anne Wilson Schaef says, “Trusting our intuition often saves us from disaster.” Sometimes there is tension between intellect and intuition—we want to listen to the one that speaks to our desire, but something inside us is sending out warning signals. Often the best choice is to wait and see; holding the tension until the choice is clear is uncomfortable, but wise.

Learning to trust yourself is a crucial part of human spiritual development. It may go against the grain of society, it may infuriate almost everyone you know, but being true to self is more important than either of those. In the words of Steve Jobs, “Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out you own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.”
