Lesser
Evil
“Always
choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil!”
Jerry
Garcia (The Grateful Dead)
I
saw this fabulous quote this morning, and truly, I have no clue what
to do with it, but I just couldn't pass it up. It's “Yogi Berra
wisdom”—simple but profound, obvious yet overlooked, like “it
ain't over 'til it's over.” What more is there to say.
I
can tell you a couple of my choices which have been the lesser of two
evils, and still, evil as can be. I ran across some delicious candies
that I like—made from fruit and nuts, that come from an orchard on
the west coast. So I ordered three boxes—I mean it's fruit and
nuts—no chocolate, no butter, how bad could it be, right? I ate a
box a week for two weeks running and gained three pounds! Candy is
still candy, huh?
I
met a man some years back, when I still thought a man essential to my
life, who was a minister of the cloth. Even held a doctorate in
ministry. Smart, good looking, spiritual—what's not to love?
Especially since my mother loved him, too, and my mother didn't love many people. Turned out to be a drunk and a notorious womanizer. Cloth or no
cloth, he was one bad apple, not to mention fruit and nuts,
with the emphasis on “nuts,” if you catch my drift.
One
of my neighbors is famous for saying, “When something isn't working
for you, lower your standards.” And sometimes that's semi-good
advice, but when you're choosing between the lesser of two evils you
can get into trouble fast. My new take on life is this: If it
looks too good to be true, run like a scalded dog. It works for me,
and I hope it works for you, too. Happy Monday—I just thought you
could use some fruit and nuts!
In
the Spirit,
Jane
