Lake
Vision
“Perhaps
the truth depends on a walk around the lake.” Wallace Stevens
What
could be better than waking up to this view, especially after the
winter we've had. Though this morning isn't warm, there is the
promise of warmth, and of future sunny days spent floating in the
lake. I don't know how anyone could wake up in a black mood in a
place like this. All the beauty that surrounds me is simply
restoring.
The
loons have departed, but there are still ducks and geese on the lake,
bathing and flapping and honking across my field of vision in search
of breakfast. Every time I come here, I am reminded of how refreshing
it is to be in the company of women. I read a quote by Kurt Vonnegut
this morning that said, “Humans beings will be happier—not when
they cure cancer or get to Mars or eliminate racial prejudice or
flush Lake Erie—but when they find ways to inhabit primitive
communities again. That's my utopia.” I can relate to that when I
am with women who support one another and work together
in companionable conversation. I imagine this is how women have
worked together in other cultures forever. I don't know when exactly
we decided to become solitary entities, family units that try to be
self-sufficient, but never truly are. I think about the long stretch
of time when I was working and raising a family, and how much easier
those years would have been with other women to share the load.
There
is something about a lake that makes for pleasant rumination. For
thinking clearer and cleaner, like the water itself after two days of
rain. I'm going outside today and spend some time in the presence of
this beauty. I'll make a scientific study of geese, and ripples on
the water. I'm sure they have profound secrets to tell.
In the Spirit,
Jane
