Baby Bliss

Pure Love

The only creatures that are evolved enough to convey pure love are dogs and infants.” Johnny Depp

I wish you could see the expression on Elise's face when her daddy smiles and talks to her. It can only be described as bliss and involves her whole body—her arms wave and her feet kick and her smile is gigantic. Clearly, if she could, she'd be jumping for joy. It is the same delirious glee I see in Liza when I come home after being away for a short time. She jumps up and down, and turns in circles, her tongue hangs out and she makes little grunty sounds of pure delight. In that moment, both are overcome by almost unbearable love.

Babies and dogs live close to the source of all emotion—joy, sorrow, anger, rage—they are in the moment, and whatever they feel is reflected in their whole being. I can approach this degree of purity and clarity on rare occasions, but only briefly. And the reason for this is that my head gets in the way. As we gain time and history, we know that bliss is fleeting; we know that for every joy there will be sorrow; in every deep and all encompassing love, there is the fear of loss. But babies haven't learned that yet, and pups never do. Through them we can experience vicarious jubilation and untainted soul. Thank God for that.
