Your
Space
“Your
sacred space is where you can find yourself again and again.”
Joseph
Campbell
Yesterday,
I spent four hours carrying all my spirituality books down to the
sewing room in the basement. My office upstairs had become cluttered
with the detritus of our ebay business. Stacks of board games, video
games, boxes of old cameras, and packing boxes and supplies clogged
the room. Even my desk was covered with scissors and tape and
shipping labels. Who can think and write in such an environment. I
know some people do, but not this “people.”
Of
course my sewing room is quite full, too. But the chaos is ordered.
In about an hour, I can return everything to its proper place
including all the stacks of fabric. It's surprising how much space
can be created by consolidating and rearranging. I moved my altar,
too; all the family photos, icons, and Virgin of Guadeloupe candles.
Now, I can look at them and remember that this space is mine and it
is sacred.
During
twenty or thirty trips up and down the stairs, I thought about the
way that life can change directions in a heart beat. My quiet and
solitary life has become neither quiet nor solitary. Which is a good
thing. Spirit doesn't let you rest on your laurels for long—she is
interested in pushing the envelope as far as possible. Remember that
next time you tell someone your life is peachy-keen—exactly as you
planned it. You may hear a giggle at the back of your mind and a
voice not your own saying, “We'll just see about that, my pretty!”
Creating
sacred space, even if it's just a tabletop with a candle, is
essential to entering into communion. Inner work, where everything
begins and ends, requires it as an incubator for creativity; a
meeting place between spirit and ego. If you do not have such a
space, I encourage you to find it—no matter how small. Let it
become your designated place for spirit's work--inside and outside of
you.
In
the spirit,
Jane
