It's Monday!

Seize the Day

Even while we speak envious time has passed. Seize the day, putting as little trust as possible in tomorrow.”
                                                  Horace

Carpe diem! Seize the day! Even if your head is spinning with trying to adjust to daylight savings time. Who wants to get out of bed in darkness? Monday morning and daylight savings time coming together makes for a fuzzy-headed start to the week. I feel for all of you who had to hit the ground running—or stumbling, as it may be.

It's raining once again in Birmingham. After two warm, spring-like days, we're back to cold and wet. Nature is such a tease. But we will cross the equinox next week and spring will be upon us for real.

Getting back to the quote by Horace, who lived two-thousand years ago and didn't have to put up with all these arbitrary time changes, we don't necessarily have to give up on tomorrow in order to make the most of today. We can seize the day, once we've had our coffee, without making it the be-all and end-all of days. But taking action today is the way to dive into the future with a stiff head wind. According to David Ross, author of Pearls of Wisdom, “If we don't look forward with hope, then there may come a time when we have cause to look back with regret.” I don't like the sound of that.

If you think about the passage of time a lot, you can get seriously anxious, so I don't, but suffice it to say that time lost is time lost. We don't get it back. It only moves in one direction. But before we get too forlorn, let us say that there are many pleasurable ways to fritter time away that may have rewards attached. Like that first-of-the-year nap I took in the porch swing yesterday afternoon, and that long, leisurely walk through the park with Liza. Non productive, yes; wasted, no. But this is Monday morning—time's a'wastin.

I hope your week is both fun and productive. Within a few days the time-change fuzz will clear and you'll be back to your “get out there and get 'em” self. Today, just go easy on yourself. Seize the day gently.

                                           In the spirit,
                                             Jane
