Asking the universe for help.

Letting Go

I was driving to an appointment one morning when the seeming enormity of this problem overwhelmed me. I pulled to the side of the road, stopped the car, and turned off the engine. I threw up my hands and yelled to whoever was 'out there' that might be paying attention, 'Okay, I give up! I need some clarity and some relief on this one. Help!'”

Elaine St. James recalls this incident under the title, “Ask for help from the universe.” In the story, she says that she noticed feeling better a short time later, and began to come to an understanding about the problem that she hadn't had before. She thought of her words not so much as a prayer to God, but as a plea to the wisdom of the universe. Whatever the source of the help, she began to experience change right away.

I think the most important part of her experience can be found in the words, “I give up.” We can, and probably should, wrestle with things a bit. I think we have to try to solve our problems using our own wits, but when we try and try and do not see results, or if the problem doesn't really belong to us, but still is impacting us in a negative way, that is the time to give up, and ask for help. Whatever you believe about God, or the universe, or anything else, there is an energy available to us that we can access by asking. Not just asking in an off-hand way, but truly giving up the struggle and asking from our hearts, “Please, help me with this.”

Some people believe that we have guardian angels who are standing by to help us whenever we ask them to. Sometimes, help comes to us even when we don't ask; something shelters us from harm, or turns our hand at the last minute. I don't know whether we have angels or not, though I'd like to think we do. Perhaps what we have is an inner monitor that acts more instinctively than our thinking brain is able to do. Sometimes, I give credit to intuition, which goes ahead of us and sends back clues about the situation we're about to enter. Whatever it is, I believe as St. James says, we can access that help and protection by asking for it, and the more we call upon this help, the more we will feel its presence with us.

If you are wrestling with a problem, or if there is something that you truly want and are not seeing in your life, I encourage you to ask for help. Ask, remembering that, “I give up!” is an important part of letting go and getting out of the way.
