Universal
Christ Consciousness
“The
absolute, Divine Mind, is all that is in everything that
is...Divinity is the enfolding and unfolding of everything that is.
Divinity is in all things in such a way that all things are in
Divinity...”
Nicholas
of Cusa
We
are about to celebrate the birth of Jesus, which took place two
thousand years ago in a stable in Bethlehem. But what we truly
celebrate at Christmas is the coming of the Cosmic Christ...the
archetype of Light; the light of consciousness. We put the mantle of
the Christ on Jesus' shoulders because through his message of love
and acceptance, we came to know God's love.
I
listened to a lecture by Father Richard Rohr on a Catholic network on
YouTube yesterday. It was about the “Cosmic Christ” which mystics
of every religion have experienced. Here are some of their
descriptions:
“In
the beginning was the Word.
The Word was with God
and the Word was God...
All that came to be had life in it,
and that life was the light of the people,
a light that shines in the dark,
a light that darkness could not overpower.” John 1
“Before
Creation, a presence existed.
Self-contained, complete, formless, voiceless, mate-less,
changeless,
which yet pervaded itself with unending motherhood.” Lao Tsu
“The
day of my spiritual awakening was the day I saw and knew I saw all
things in God and God in all things.” Mechtild of Megdeburg
The
Cosmic Christ is the Light that is born within us when we understand
that all things are connected, that all things are, indeed, One.
According to Fr. Rohr, Christ was original. Christ existed before
Jesus and was manifested in the love and message of Jesus. Christ
exists not just through the revelation of scripture, but also in the
created order. It is 'universal' which literally means, “the
turning of one thing.”
As
we enter into Christmas, let us keep our sights on the unity of the
Light. Let us pray that the loving, creative spirit of the Cosmic
Christ will permeate us so completely that we will see that Light in
ourselves, in each other, and in all of creation.
In
the spirit,
Jane
