Love
of Neighbor
“The
rule for us all is perfectly simple. Do not waste time bothering
whether you 'love' your neighbor; act as if you did. As soon as we do
this, we find one of the great secrets. When you are behaving as if
you loved someone, you will presently come to love him.”
C.S.
Lewis
This
is the clarion call for Americans today and beyond this day. When the dust
settles after this election, let us put aside our petty differences
and support one another as though we were the 'Christian nation' we
so vociferously claim to be. Our divisiveness and disharmony has
given us far too many years of ill feelings and ill will toward one
another. The desire to move this country forward requires that we
rise above our divisions and support the winner of the election,
regardless of where we stand now.
Here
is my personal commitment: I will support the winner of today's
election even if he is not the person I voted for. I will call upon
my representatives in the U.S. Congress and Senate to do the same.
The chaos that we feel as a nation is coming from us. The inertia and
gridlock in Washington is a reflection of our own determination to
have it our way or no way. We are responsible for the people we
elect. We are responsible for how our elections are conducted, and we
are responsible for the way we treat each other in the process.
We
all believe in the American spirit to get things done and to do them
well. That spirit comes from us and not just from our President. Let
us join together and act as though we love him—and our
neighbors—until we actually do.
In
the spirit,
Jane
