Questioning the Ground of Being

Losing Faith?

“You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.”

“If patience is worth anything, it must endure to the end of time. And a living faith will last in the midst of the blackest storm.”
                                   Mohandas Gandhi

I don’t know about you, but occasionally I go through crises of faith in which I doubt everything I have ever believed, and don’t have any idea whether I will regain my balance. I question whether my original beliefs have any basis in reality, or are just fairy tales to dispel the darkness. It feels a little like Alice falling down the rabbit hole—I don’t know where the bottom is. Faith seems innately human to me; we believe because we are hardwired to believe. But the institutions to which we attach our faith are sometimes not holy at all. Whether it is Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism or Hinduism, many terrible things have been done in the name of God.

I entertain these doubts from time to time and consider them to be akin to Jacob’s wrestling with God—an experience shared by all serious seekers. Last night I dreamed that someone sent me a message written on lined notebook paper. Imbedded in it was the Journey song, ‘Don’t Stop Believein’, the chorus of which goes, ‘don’t stop believin’, hold on to the feelin’,…it goes on and on and on…’ I woke up laughing. My dream-maker has a great sense of humor. He knows when I’m too serious and delivers something just plain silly to disrupt my somberness.

A living faith goes through peaks and valleys just like anything else that’s living. We should not beat ourselves up for our doubts, and questioning should be encouraged. I hope if you have questions about your faith that you will seek out someone whom you trust to talk with. It was, after all, my Main Man who said, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you…”

                                  Just do it!
