Our Mysterious World

Do You Love a Good Mystery?

“Life is a balance between known and unknowns.  Space, nature, the inner workings of our bodies--so many aspects of our lives are still mysteries even with all the information we have.  Our world’s religions have given us explanations.  Science has explained what the religions could not and refuted some of what the religions have taught.  Yet so much mystery remains.  I have found that the more I can relish the mystery, the more meaning I can draw into my life”
                          Laura Berman Fortgang

When I was a child, I loved Nancy Drew and Ginny Gordon mysteries.  I read all of both series and craved more.  I haunted the stacks at our town library for new releases and similar series.  As a teen-ager, Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot were my constant companions.  Later it was Ian Fleming and Robert Ludlum, and the list goes on and on.  All the world loves a good mystery.

I think I loved mysteries so much because the good guys always won; they always caught the crook or foiled the espionage ring.  Life isn’t like that, but for a little while, I could imagine that it was.  Life is one great mystery.  Truth is, we do not know from one day to the next, or really, from one minute to the next, what life will bring.  Take our current stand off in Congress, for example.  We’re all out here in ‘reality’ quaking in our boots about what will happen if they don’t act, and they are all up in Washington’s ‘unreality’ playing political games.  We don’t know what the outcome will be, one way or the other, and the uncertainty is heart stopping.  It’s a mystery, isn’t it?  Will the good guys win?  Who are the good guys, anyway?

Life is messy, unpredictable, mysterious, rich and at times, enchanting.  Sometimes it is mind-boggling, agonizing, and difficult.  All we humans can do is hang on for the ride and hope for the best.  We can relish the mystery and stay tuned to see how it works out.  We can put our trust in the good stuff--love, kindness, faith, and civility.  And, since we live in a democracy, we can vote these jokers right out of office!

                                  Loving the mystery (sigh),
