Knowing Who You Love

Someone To Tell It To

“Someone to tell it to is one of the fundamental needs of human beings.”
                                  Miles Franklin

“Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind.  “Pooh,” he whispered.  ‘Yes, Piglet?”  “Nothing,” said Piglet, taking Pooh’s paw.  ‘I just wanted to be sure of you.”
                                  A.A. Milne

“I felt it shelter to speak to you.”
                                  Emily Dickenson

Steven Levine, poet, author and teacher of Buddhism, asked the questions, “If you were going to die soon and had only one phone call to make, who would you call and what would you say?  And why are you waiting?”  These are good questions to ponder.  Not intended to be maudlin, but simply as a reminder of the importance of love and friendship.  There is no sadder life than one in which there is ‘no one to tell it to’.

I’m not necessarily talking about a mate, but more a friend or soul mate, who knows you well enough to see right into your being and hear what your heart is saying no matter what comes out of your mouth.  Who do you love?  And more than that, who do you ‘know’ in the truest sense of the word.  It is not always a spouse or a child.  Sometimes, the very fact that we have an expected role to play with spouse and children precludes this kind of knowing.  We don’t want to harm them with such nakedness.  And yet, being seen in our truest skin is a fundamental human need.

Who is it that is ‘shelter’ to you?  Who is it that you can drop the veils with, take down the barriers, remove the masks and be seen in all your truth and who will look with unguarded eyes and see you for exactly who you are?  And cherish you anyway.  That person is a pearl of great price.  Let them know today.

                                  Namaste,
